There are long shadows on the dunes.A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "A view of the White Sands at sunset. This great natural wonder covers 270 square miles. A portion of the Sands has been set aside as a National Monument. The great dunes are almost 100% pure gypsum an dresemble granulated sugar. The Sands are located about 19 miles west of Alamogordo, New Mexico, on U.S. Highway 70."
