DescriptionA road grader clears a road in White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, New Mexico. A sand dune is to the left of the frame. A typed caption attached to the back of the photograph reads, "The National Park Service maintains an excellent road into the dunes of White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico. Because of the constant shifting of the sands the road requires continuous maintenance. The White Sands cover 176,000 acres in the Tularosa Basin an dhave been piled into great dunes by prevailing winds over a period of thousands of years. The great dunes are almost 100% pure gypsum and resemble granulated sugar. The entrance to White Sands National Monument is located 18 miles southwest of teh town of Alamogordo, New Mexico on U.S. Highway 70."
