A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "A view of the White Sands in southern New Mexico. The great natural wonder covers 270 square miles. A portion of the Sands have been set aside as a National Monument. The great dunes are almost 100% pure gypsum and resemble granulated sugar. White Sands National Monument is located about 18 miles southwest of Alamogrodo, New Mexico, on U.S. Highway 70."
