DescriptionThree women pose with skis on top of a sand dune at White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, New Mexico. There are mountains in the far background. One woman rests her arms on her upright skis in the sand. Another sits in the sand with her skis attached to her ski boots. The third woman holds her ski poles and stands on her skis. A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "This isn't really a picture of skiing on the snow but a group of young ladies frolicking at White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico. The White Sands are a 30-mile desert of gleaming white, made up of nearly 100 percent pure gypsum. The prevailing winds have piled the sands into great dunes ranging from 10 to 60 feet in height. White Sands National Monument is located about 18 miles southwest of Alamogordo on U.S. Highway 70."
