DescriptionPlants and grasses grown along the dunes in White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "White Sands National Monument, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The eastern edge of the Great White Sands. The sand moves eastward a few inches each year and gradually cover all vegetation in its path. The yucca and the mesquite wage a losing battle against the Sands. In some cases this battle goes on for several years, with the plants growing toward the sun at about the same rate that the Sands cover their branches."
