A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "White Sands National Monument, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. On the eastern bornder of the Sands Mesquite and Yucca made a desperate fight to avoid submerging[.] [M]any of the plants when uncovered have been discovered to have trunk more than 30 feet high. The plants grow rapidly in their desperate effort to keep their heads above the Sands."
