DescriptionThis map depicts the territories of New Mexico and Utah, showing what would soon become the Confederate Territory of Arizona. Colton's map was created in 1855 and printed in 1861, one year before the Civil War moved into the New Mexico Territory. It also shows the overprinted location of Arizona Territory - south, rather than west, of New Mexico. "Alburquerque" eventually dropped its second "r." Here, the town is spelled "Alberquerque." Each section is depicted in different colors with hard lines between the territories. A detailed intertwining vine design borders the map along the edge.
