DescriptionThis map depicts North America in 1848, the year the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American war. In this version, Texas claims land east of the upper Rio Grande, placing Albuquerque squarely in what is now the Lone Star State. Texas gave up its claim to New Mexico in the Compromise of 1850. California also largely includes Arizona in this depiction and only states east of Texas are formed. The Nebraska territory is north of the thin slice of New Mexico that borders the Rio Grande. Each area and state of America is filled with a different color. On each side are explanatory tables explaining scale, distances, and more information about the map. The Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are located, as is the Gulf of Mexico.
