DescriptionThis is a map of the village of Basel, Switzerland, from the French edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia. The map shows an aerial view of the town. There is a key to the map near the lower left corner, and it is inside a line-framed square. The key is titled "En la grad Basle" and various places on the map are lettered. The corresponding locations have the matching letters printed on them. The key also includes a section titled "La petite Basle." These locations correspond to a small map on the reverse side of this map. Between these page numbers is the title of the map: "Le pourtraict de la ville de Basle felon la vraye fituation d'icelle, ainfi qu'elle a efte l'an 1549," which roughly translates to: The persecution of the city of Basle according to the true situation of this one, as it was in the year 1549. At the top, in the center of the map, is the coat of arms for the city of Basel, Switzerland.
