DescriptionThis map is of the siege of Metz in Lorraine, France, from the French edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia. The map is small and mostly contained in the left upper two thirds of the entire page. It is outlined in a black line. Across the top of the map, outside the frame, it says, "Le protraict de la ville de Metz auec la de-/[in smaller print]claration de beaucoup d'edifices." At the center top, just inside the black frame, it says, "OCCASVS." At the center bottom, just inside the black frame, it says, "ORIENS." In the middle of the map is the city of Metz, surrounded by a wall. Buildings inside the boundary of the wall are labeled with letters that correspond to the places listed on a key below the map, outside the frame. Outside the left side wall of the city, a line of cannons is set up facing Metz. Surrounding the walled city are clusters of tents showing the various camps involved in the siege.
