DescriptionThis map of western Mexico is the left half of a larger map made by Italian cartographer Giovanni Maria Cassini to depict North America. This example shows the territory of New Mexico and the present-day Mexican states of Baja California, Baja California-Sur, Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Durango. Cities like Santa Fe and the Rio Grande (called 'Rio del Norte') are marked alongside the Gulf of California as 'Mar Vermiglio' (the Red Sea). The lower left features a large decorative title cartouche showing a hunting scene. The title is bordered with an extended leafy vine and in a cave two animals watch the two figures. One is armed with a bow and arrow, and then other holds the hand of a child and is near two dogs. A tent is behind them and in the foreground a snake moves in the grass around a rock.
