DescriptionThis map shows Mexico as far south as the Yucatan Peninsula, Lower California, and portions of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida with the Gulf of Mexico, streams, and lines of mountains noted. Each town is noted with a larger font used for the larger cities. The map's title is in the upper right and the border of the map is a recurring black and blank bar pattern with longitude and latitude marks throughout. Sanson's map details what was known of the area of New Mexico and Florida for Europeans in the 17th century. Engraved between the founding of Santa Fe in 1610 and the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, its more important features include Santa Fe, the Californie Isle, the "Vermillion Sea" between California and the mainland, and the mythical lake north of Taos (Taosii) first reported by Antonio Espejo in 1583.
