Description1. Welcome to "Gran Quivira National Monument"! It contains the ruins of the ancient Indian Pueblo of Humanas, and of the Franciscan Mission, which was built within the Pueblo by Spanish padres about 1626. The Pueblo was abandoned between 1671 & 1680, probably becuase of fear inspired by raids made by the warlike Plains Indians.2. Stop No. 1 on the Mission Trail! The countryside before you has changed very little since the time the cillage was occupied. The Pueblo Indians were peaceful farming people. If you had been standing here 300 years ago, you might have seen the men of the village working in the broad level plains below, carefully cultivating their precious crops of corn, beans, and squash.
