DescriptionThree people stand outside the front courtyard wall of San Estevan del Rey Mission Church at Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. The adobe church has two towers over the main entrance to the church and a low, single-story building to the right. On the far right is a two-story convent building.
A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, " The massive Mission Church of the Pueblo of Acoma, towers into the sky in southwestern New Mexico. The Mission was established in 1629 by Friar Juan Ramirez and is considered unique on the American continent and the largest in the Southwest. Adjoining the church are the conventos and the portal on the right, the latter being used as a lookout to guard against the approach of the enemy. Materials for construction of the Mission were carried over a treacherous trail up the side of the sheer 400-foot cliff by the Indians living in the pueblo.
