DescriptionThis certificate of completion was given to Mrs. Harry A. Batten by the Captain of the Viking Royal Sea group for taking an Alaskan cruise. The ink is brown on a neutral-colored paper. There is a map of Alaska in the center of the page. On the right side of the map, inside an ornate frame, it says "ALASKA." Above the map, it says, "Be it hereby known that the vessel/ROYAL VIKING SEA/her passengers, officers and crew have sailed the North Pacific/from California and Canada to the glacier-fed waters of the Gulf of/Alaska and cruised the magnificent Inside Passage, gateway to the last/American frontier: Alaska, largest of all the United States." Below the map it says, "And be it further acknowledged that/Mrs. Harry A. Batten/did undertake this oceangoing adventure in perpetuation of the/pioneer spirit of the Klondike days of 1898, and henceforth shall be/recognized as an Honorary Alaskan Sourdough, having witnessed the wonder/of this land’s glacier-laced fjords, the awesome splendor of primeval/forests, and the ageless grandeur of snowcapped mountains./[signature]/CAPTAIN, ROYAL VIKING SEA."In either corner of the page, there is a vignette map inside a circular frame. The cartographer is featured next to his respective map. Clockwise from upper left, it is Sebastian Munster/1540, an unidentified cartographer/1759, Jedidiah Morse/1798, and Abraham Ortelius/1570. In the lower right corner, outside the frame of the certificate, it says, "Copyright 1974 by Rand McNally & Company/Printed in U.S.A."
