DescriptionThis metal campaign pin features a sepia base color with white accents. The circular, sepia-colored border is encompassed with the words "FOR PRESIDENT" in large white lettering on the top portion. The center illustrates a lithograph print of Al Smith (1873-1944) within a smaller white circle. The bottom reads "ALFRED E. SMITH" in the same white lettering. Utilized as a campaign button for Smith, he campaigned as the first Roman Catholic President, but met defeat to Republican opponent Herbert Hoover (1864-1964). Despite his loss in the 1928 presidential election, his campaign still significantly impacted taking steps towards Franklin D. Roosevelt's (1882-1945) New Deal coalition, which preceded the start of the Great Depression. Making an impact in the Southwest, Smith's campaign shed light on major religious and cultural divisions but received support from a portion of Catholic voters in the northern portion of New Mexico.
