DescriptionThis campaign button was produced for George Wallace's 1968 bid for the United States presidency. George Wallace, the Governor of Alabama, ran for president in 1968 as the candidate for the American Independent Party, capitalizing on growing discontent with the mainstream political establishment. A staunch segregationist and advocate for "law and order," Wallace's campaign appealed to voters who opposed the civil rights movement and the liberal policies of the time. While he did not win, he garnered significant support, particularly in the South, and won five Southern states. Wallace’s third-party bid highlighted the deep divisions in the country during a time of civil unrest and led to a realignment in American politics. The button is red, white and blue. There is a blue portrait of Wallace in the center of the button, surrounded by white text. The text reads "WALLACE for PRESIDENT / STAND UP FOR AMERICA.On View
