DescriptionThis black and white photograph shows a crowd of marchers in Montgomery, Alabama during the Selma to Montgomery march. The crowd stretches down the street into the background of the photograph, however there are four individuals that can be seen at the font of the group. On the very left hand side is Roy Wilkins with a big smile wearing a suit and tie with a hat and small button pinned to his collar. Roy Wilkins was the executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Just behind him with only her face visible is Ina Balin. To the direct right of Wilkins is James Baldwin. Baldwin is wearing a checkered shirt and dark pants, he is also holding a cigarette in his left hand. He is looking towards the left of the photograph and is smiling widely. His left hand is holding the hand of Joan Baez. She is wearing a black dress and necklace with a cross on it. She has a bag over one shoulder and is holding a white cloth in the same hand that is connected to Baldwin. She is looking slightly left of frame and is smiling widely. On the far right is James Forman, a leader with the Students for Nonviolence Coordinating Committee. He is wearing a white shirt and dark overalls. His right hand is holding the hand of Baez while his left is holding a jacket. The crowd behind them is made of a variety of people, black and white, men and women wearing a variety of clothing. They are carrying a few signs and a few United States' flags. There are buildings visible on each side of the street that the marchers are on.
