DescriptionThis black and white photograph shows a group or marchers starting the final day of the march from Selma to Montgomery. On the far left there is a white man wearing casual clothing and a vest. Next to him is James, also called Jim, Letherer, he is wearing casual clothing, a vest, and a white hat. He is also using crutches because his right leg has been amputated. In the middle of the group are two priests with dark clothing and vests underneath their robes. The priest on the left is Reverend Dominic Orsini, he has an eyepatch over his right eye. The priest on the right is Reverend Arthur Mattot holding a bunched up flag. The two people on the left are white nun, Sister Mary Leoline, holding the arm of Rev. Mattot, she is wearing a habit and along with dark robes and a vest. Next to her is another priest, Reverend Doctor Theodore Alexander Gill Sr., wearing dark robes and a vest while holding an umbrella. Standing apart from this group is a black man wearing casual clothing on the right edge of the photograph. The vests were given to the 300 marchers that completed the entire 54 mile march. There are other marchers visible behind the front group. These marchers are holding several large flags of the United States of America. Trees and buildings can be seen in the background.
