DescriptionJames Letherer is shown marching with the other Selma to Montgomery marchers in this black and white photograph. Letherer completed the march on crutches due to losing one leg to cancer as a child. He is shown here on the left side of the photograph walking somewhat ahead of a line of marchers who are behind him. He is wearing a t-shirt, pants, and a vest which denotes that he was one of several hundred who completed the full 54 mile march. His forehead is out of the frame but his head is turned toward the camera and his mouth is open in speech. Just within frame on the bottom half of the photo are the arms of two people with hands grasped. They appear to be standing on the edge of the street. The rest of the photo shows a long line of marchers, many also wearing vests and some carrying flags of the United States of America in varying sizes. They walk along a paved street with several white lines running along it. There are a few marchers walking ahead of Letherer, he is the only one in the photograph whose face can be seen.
