DescriptionSheriff James Clark is relaxing in his office in the Dallas County Courthouse in Selma, Alabama in this black and white photograph. The photograph was taken on the evening of the first day of the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. At this point most of the voting rights protestors were out of the city and outside of his jurisdiction after months of demonstrations. Clark is wearing a black suit and tie as he sits in his office. He is leaning back in his chair with his hands resting in relaxed fists on the top of his head, his arms are also bent on either side of this head. He is looking at the viewer and appears to be beginning to smile. Behind him is a wall with six different frames displaying certificates, letters, and a medal related to his work as a sheriff. On View
