DescriptionThis black and white photograph shows marchers in the staging area before entering the city of Montgomery during the final day of the Selma to Montgomery march. There are three black persons, one woman and two men, who are visible in the photograph along with four flags of the United States of America. The woman stands at the center of the photograph. She is staring towards the viewer wearing a white headwrap, checker shirt, and a vest. She is holding a United States flag on a white flag pole. Next to her is a black man wearing dark clothing and the same vest. These vests were given to those 300 marchers who completed the entire 54 mile journey. Behind these two is another man wearing the same vest and a black hat. A large crowd can be seen in the distance and the sky can be seen above.
