DescriptionThis identification bage, constructed of plastic, paper, and ribbon from the Albuquerque Fire Department. The base color of the ribbon portion of the award is a vibrant scarlet red, reading; "18th Annual / Tri-State / Fireman's / Association" in serifed, gold lettering, and the location and date, "Gallup / New Mexico / Aug. 24 & 25 / 1956" separated by the convention's symbol in the same gold coloring. On the top paper portion of the pin, the words; "W.A. Westerfield / Albuquerque / NM." are displayed in handwritten cursive. This ribbon belonged to Albuquerque Fire Department Chief W. A. Westerfeld, although his name was misspelled in the written portion. Chief W. A. (Arthur) Westerfeld served as a firefighter in Albuquerque for forty-three years and was the head of the department for thirty-one years. The Albuquerque Fire Department was established in 1900 due to a rising population and the increase of fire hazards in Albuquerque. On View
