BiographyAn Acoma and Hopi potter born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1951, Barbara Cerno started making pottery around 1969. Barbara's mother, Esther Gun Hayah, was of the Acoma Eagle and Antelope Clans and her father, William David Hayah, was of the Hopi Rabbit and Tobacco Clans. She is related to Marcella Kane and Bessie Namoki, two prominent Hopi potters. Barbara first learned pottery making from her husband's mother, Santana Cimmeron Cerno, and also studied Hopi style pottery from her aunt, Blanche Dewakuku, as well as Mark Tahbo. She makes some Hopi style pottery and some Acoma style pottery, mostly in collaboration with her husband, Joseph Cerno. Together, they make large traditional polychrome ollas.
