DescriptionA pendant necklace of turquoise, yellow lip oyster, spiny oyster, white conch shell, and white shell. Utilizing several precious shells derived from coastal deposits, this dance shell necklace features a suspended yellow-lip oyster shell affixed with concentric bands of turquoise mosaic atop the perforated end of the shell. An additional band of alternating mother of pearl and black jet divide the stones from the unadorned remainder of the shell. Linen threads supporting the latter are further elaborated with vertical beads of alternating white shell, spiny oyster, and turquoise. Born at Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo, artist Ava Marie “Cool-Ca-Ya” Coriz was a member of the Antelope Clan and learned jewelry making from her father, Lupe Pena.
