DescriptionThis colored copper-engraved map is titled with a first line including the mapmaker, Abraham Ortelius, and the Latin title "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum." This European map was made in Antwerp, Belgium, and contains the mark "NOVVS ORBIS" indicating how new the world's depiction was, with information about the map written in Latin. The date and artist's name are at the bottom right, and two title cartouches feature, one in the lower left in blue above a large landmass above South America, and one in the northern area above New Mexico in North America. Ships feature across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and there are ornate designs in the curved corners of the map's border.
