BiographyGrace Storey Putnam is known for doll designs. She was born in San Diego, California in 1877. She attended art school where she met her first husband, Arthur Putnam, who was a sculptuor. They married in 1899 and moved to San Francisco. After raising their children while Arthur pursued his art career, the coupe divorced in 1915. Grace Putnam began offering painting and drawing lessons and sculpting dolls to support her family. In 1920, a visit to a Salvation Army day nursery inspired her to create a doll face as lifelike as possible. Her Bye-Lo Baby Doll brought her great success.
