Mary Pickford

1892 Toronto, Canada – 1979 Santa Monica, California
BiographyMary Pickford, born Gladys Marie Smith, was a Canadian actress, producer, and screenwriter who was a pioneer in the early Hollywood film industry with a career that spanned five decades. She was frequently called “America’s Sweetheart” and is best known for the roles in which she played innocent, loveable little girls. So popular was the characterization that she continued to play children until she was 22. Pickford and actor-producer Douglas Fairbanks (to whom she was married between 1920 and 1936), founded Pickford–Fairbanks Studios and United Artists together. She was one of the founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1975, Pickford received a special Academy Award for her contributions to the American film industry. Pickford was considered to be one of the most recognizable women in history and to this day an iconic figure in early cinema history. Her film credits include: The Lonely Villa (1910), Pollyanna (1920), Coquette (1929).
