BiographyBorn in 1938 at Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, Grace Medicine Flower is a member of the Tafoya family of potters. Her grandmother was Sara Fina Tafoya and her parents were Camilio Sunflower Tafoya and Agapita Yellow Flower Tafoya. She is the niece of Margaret Tafoya and sister of Joseph Lonewolf. Her father was one of the first men potters at Santa Clara and taught her how to make pots. Medicine Flower began making pots for the market in the early 1960s and from 1968 to 1972 she collaborated with her father on the pottery. She began exhibiting her work in 1973 and was honored at the White House in 1974. She is known for incised designs, often including butterflies and hummingbirds.
