Charles Curtis

1860 North Topeka, Kansas Territory - 1936 Washington, D.C.
BiographyCharles Curtis, an attorney, served as vice president under former President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) from 1929 to 1933. Before being the first Native American to hold this position in office, Curtis controversially helped pass the Curtis Act of 1898, weakening Native American tribal governments within the Indian Territory and resulting in the sale of tribal lands to settlers. While serving as vice president, Curtis primarily acted as the Senate's presiding officer, overseeing legislative debates, but lacked the power to structure policies directly.
