Gerald Ford

1913 Omaha, Nebraska - 2006 Rancho Mirage, California
BiographyGerald Ford (1913-2006) assumed the presidency as the 38th president following Richard Milhous Nixon's resignation in 1974. Ford was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election. He remains the only U.S. president never elected to the office. Appointed vice president in 1973 after Spiro Agnew's resignation, Ford ascended to the presidency when Nixon stepped down. However, his 1976 campaign was tarnished by widespread backlash over his controversial decision to pardon Nixon for his crimes.
