DescriptionThis campaign button was produced for Barry Goldwater's 1964 bid for the United States presidency. Barry Goldwater was the Republican nominee in the 1964 presidential election, running against incumbent President, Lyndon B. Johnson. A senator from Arizona, Goldwater was known for his strong conservative views, advocating for limited government, lower taxes, and a more aggressive foreign policy, particularly regarding the Cold War. His campaign faced significant opposition from both moderate Republicans and Democrats, with Johnson winning a landslide victory, securing over 60% of the popular vote. Despite his loss, Goldwater’s candidacy marked a turning point for the Republican Party, helping to lay the foundation for the conservative movement that would rise to prominence in the following decades. The button is mostly black, with some gold detailing and lettering. There is a gold star above a gold band, which has a line of black text inside of it that reads "GOLDWATER." Beneath that, there is a line of gold text that reads "IN '64."On View
