DescriptionThis color photograph is of the photographer Barbara De Genevieve with a written inscription by De Genevieve underneath. De Genevieve is posing, kneeling on the ground, and petting a dog in front of an artwork hung on the wall. The inscription reads:
Salman Rushdie has said, "Reality and mortality are not givens but imperfect human constructs." The two are similar abstractions because they are both arbitrary constructed with very limited parameters through language. Personal reality is only slightly different in that it is contingent upon the language used to articulate ones [sic] individual circumstances. Depending on how solitary or socially oriented I am at a given time, personal reality can be as manipulating as cultural reality. Reality is anti-visible, and it's been quite unnerving to scrutinize the concept. With what seems to be a return to some kind of totalitarian madness in the U.S., what I believed, perhaps complacently, to be reality/freedom in a democracy is coming apart at the seams [sic]. It's frightening to see how closely linked reality and mortality really are.
