DescriptionThis sewing machine cabinet houses a delicately painted cast iron sewing machine, adorned with gold floral designs and the name "Lopez" prominently displayed across the main body. The name on the machine stands out, as in the early 20th century, particularly in rural communities such as those throughout New Mexico, sewing machines were integral to a family's livelihood, offering both income and security. This dual desk and sewing machine features a classic treadle-style mechanism, identified by the foot pedal at the base, used to power the spinning of the thread wheel. In addition to the concealable sewing machine, the desk includes a foldable side table. Four drawers are positioned on each side of the desk, with one centered in the middle. The desk rests upon a steel frame decorated with subtle detailing. This object is significant as it represents a time in American history when a sewing machine was not just a tool, but a vital lifeline for many families.
