Fergusson Hook and Ladder Company

Las Vegas, New Mexico, ca. 1885 - mid-20th century
BiographyFergusson Hook and Ladder Company, named after New Mexico's former Territory delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, Harvey B. Fergusson (1848-1915), acted as a volunteer fire company established due to increasing fire hazards and a rising population due to the arrival of railroads. With its headquarters in Albuquerque being the location of the first general firemen's convention ever held in the Southwest during the nineteenth century, the company played a significant role in the improved fire safety infrastructure in Albuquerque and in laying down the starting point for establishing a professional fire department.
