DescriptionRio Grande Saltillo-influenced frazada or blanket, Classic Period, before 1850. The blanket has a serrated central diamond created by smaller diamonds surrounded by diamond field & zigzag border on sides, and different top & bottom border. This weaving represents the height of Saltillo-style weaving along the Río Grande. It features an elaborate modified Saltillo diamond center, a border, zigzags, diamonds, and piquietes. The weaver used a very high number of wefts, and doubled the warps on the inside of the borders to strengthen the weaving and to keep it from spreading.
In the center diamond, the weaver added blue to adjust minor imperfections. Other diamond elements were altered or cut off, not by the weaver, but during a later repair.
