DescriptionThe weaver used synthetic dyes to add color and drama to this otherwise humble utility blanket. The pattern is a reproduction of the Diné (Navajo) Third Phase chief blanket design consisting of stepped diamonds and half-diamonds arranged in three bands, but woven into a field of mixed brown and beige yarns. Not a genizaro weaving; clearly Hispanic New Mexican.
The presence of a center seam confirms that the blanket was woven on a horizontal Spanish treadle loom. The warp ends were bound with red yarn at a later date.
