DescriptionRio Grande blanket sarape, Frazada. 5-band style "Moki" pattern with "mariposas" (butterflies) in the stripes with cochineal centers.
The mariposa design is an adaptation of the Saltillo diamond, set within the traditional five-band system of striped blankets.
The yarn is spun in three different thicknesses, suggesting that more than one person may have may have been working the loom. It may have been woven by several different family members, or was perhaps a workshop piece. The weaver(s) may have also been trying to conserve the precious indigo-dyed blue yarns, preferring to use more of the natural beige and black.
