DescriptionThis stamp vending machine was produced by Schermack Co. in 1935. Stamp vending machines became popular in the United States around 1905, as they made it easier for people to purchase stamps while also lowering costs for the postal service. The machine appears as a large, metal, gray box with two coin slots on the front. Between the slots, there are two metal panels with text that reads: "3¢ / STAMPS / 3 FOR A DIME / INSERT / DIME / ABOVE / THEN PULL / HERE,' and '1¢ STAMP / 4 FOR / NICKEL / INSERT / NICKEL / ABOVE / THEN PULL / HERE.' Beneath the panels is the dispensing compartment and a plaque identifying the manufacturer, which reads: 'MADE BY / Schermack / DETROIT / LEADING STAMP MACHINE / MAKERS SINCE 1906." This object serves as a reminder of the enduring role technology and innovation have played over the past century. On View
