DescriptionThis object is a souvenir mate cup or cuia as it is called in Southern Brazil. The object is comprised of a hollow, wooden cup carved to resemble a gourd, the traditional vessel for serving mate. The cup sits on a three-legged stand that has decorative carvings visible on the exterior. Three arms extend upwards from the stand to secure the wooden component in place. An engraved metal rim is located at the opening of the object. A metal stamp has been nailed onto the side of the wooden vessel, between two of the supporting arms. Text written inside a horseshoe design reads: "LEMBRANÇA DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL," meaning "souvenir from Rio Grande do Sul." An image of a Brazilian gaucho on horseback sits within the horseshoe design. "EBERKOC" is stamped above the gaúcho. While the metal components are slightly tarnished and sit loosely on the wooden cup, the object is in good condition.
