DescriptionThis is the gravestone for Albuquerque Mayor Henry N. Jaffa (1844-1901). Jaffa was a German Jewish immigrant to the United States and was the first mayor of Albuquerque. The stone is a large, heavy stone headstone which bears significant weathering and damage and contains an engraving with the birth and death dates of Henry Jaffa on the top side. The bottom engravings contain the text "Rest In Peace" in English as well as letters in Hebrew. The Hebrew letters are an abbreviation for a common Jewish phrase that is engraved on headstones: "May his soul be bound up in the bond of life".
