DescriptionThe magazine cover is a black and white photo of U.S. General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz. He is shown smoking a cigarette in front of a map of China, Manchuria, the Sea of Japan, and Japan. In black lettering, the headline reads, "'TOOEY' SPAATZ/BOMBER OF JAPAN". In white letters on a red background is the title of the magazine: "LIFE". There is a red stripe across the bottom of the cover. Written in white letters on this red background, near the bottom righthand corner, is "AUGUST 20, 1945, 10 CENTS/BY SUBSCRIPTION: TWO YEARS $8.50"
