The highest-profile trial of an Albuquerque journalist occurred in June 1926 as Carl C. Magee, then-editor of the New Mexico State Tribune, was charged with manslaughter. These three years of courtroom drama were known as the “stormy petrel” (a seabird at home in the roughest of seas) of New Mexican journalism due to Magee’s trial and subsequent acquittal. While images from court artists now take the place of images such as this from the trial, the public’s fascination with court drama has continued long after this journalistic example.
