BiographyThe United Auto Workers union was founded in 1935 as a labor union for auto workers and industrial workers primarily in the North. Overtime it has grown to include many types of labor including not just industrial labor but also agricultural labor and includes unions across the United States, its territories, and Canada. The organization reached its peak during the mid-20th century but declined after the 1970s for both internal and external reasons. Today the full name of the union is the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America and has over 391, 000 active members.
