BiographyAdlai Stevenson II (1900-1965), the former governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953 and a United States ambassador to the United Nations from 1961 until his death in 1965. Stevenson and Estes Kefauver (1903-1963) campaigned during the 1960 election only to face defeat by opponent John F. Kennedy (1917- 1963). Despite their defeat on several occasions, Stevenson and Kefauver played a positive role in education development, supporting aspects such as guaranteeing raised salaries for teachers, and was inspired by educational materials in the U.S.
