Buchanan first performed as a music hall comedian in Glasgow, Scotland under the name Chump Buchanan. He took the stage name Jack Buchanan after moving to London. He worked in the theater on stages on Broadway and London, acted and directed in films, and was a frequent broadcaster on British radio.
