BiographyMatt Mahurin’s work spans over thirty years in the areas of illustration, film directing and photography, for which he has won several national awards. His photo essays have been published in the New York Times, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone, among others. His photo essay work documents topics of abortion clinics, the homeless, mental hospitals, AIDS patients, the prison system, and also the areas of Haiti, Ireland, Mexico, Nicaragua, France and Japan. Photographs from Mahurin’s Texas Prison (1988) series are in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mahurin’s directing career consists of several music videos of famous musicians such as R.E.M., Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, U2, Metallica, and Joni Mitchell. His music video for R.E.M.’s, Orange Crush (1989), was given an MTV Music Award for Best Post-Modern Video. Other notable works include the documentary, I Like Killing Flies (2003), which was chosen for the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and feature film, FEEL (2006), which debuted on the Sundance Film Channel in 2010. Mahurin lectures and teaches image making workshops in California, where he lives currently.
