Born William Lerche, William Russell was an American actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. He appeared in over two hundred silent-era motion pictures between 1910 and 1929, directing five of them in 1916 and producing two through his own production company in 1918 and 1925. William Russell died at the age of 44 from pneumonia. Helen Ferguson, an actress, was his second of two wives.
