BiographyJames King Woolenshirt was born in Shiprock, New Mexico, starting his career in art by experimenting with "shoe polish and house paints". King is bit'ahnii (under His Cover People Clan), born for Naasht'ezhi Diné'e (Zuni Clan). While in high school, he sold his paintings for $15 to $20 at a local trading post. After graduating in 1971, King attended art school at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah, but found the artistic styles he was exposed to different from his own methods. King has worked with oils, watercolor, and acrylic with a preference for oil paint. In 2002, he won the Best of Show at the Heard Museum. In 2005, he won the Best of Category at both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial.
