BiographyA Representative and a Senator from New Mexico; moved to Albuquerque in 1917 for tuberculosis treatment. He became a newspaper reporter and editor in Albuquerque from 1918-1922 before becoming an insurance agent. He married Henrietta McCartney in 1921 and they had two children: Sherburne Presba Anderson and Nancy Anderson.

He served as NM State Treasurer from 1933-1934. He was elected as a Democrat to the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. and served from January 3, 1941, until his resignation on June 30, 1945, having been appointed Secretary of Agriculture. He served as Secretary of Agriculture from June 30, 1945, until his resignation May 10, 1948. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1948 and served from January 3, 1949, to January 3, 1973. Served as chairman for the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, Joint Committee on Construction of Building for Smithsonian, Joint Committee on Navaho-Hopi Indian, Special Committee on Preservation of Senate Records, Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, Special Committee on National Fuel Policy, Committee on Aeronautical and Space Science.

He retired to Albuquerque and died November 11, 1975. Interment in Fairview Memorial Park.
